Poillon nets 7 goals in Seneca Valley lacrosse win
Peet Poillon had seven goals and two assists and Chad Melberg three goals and six assists to key Seneca Valley's boys lacrosse team to an 18-7 victory over Trinity in the second round of the WPSLA Division 2 playoffs Saturday.
Defensive specialist Brent Tranter also scored a goal and was the MVP of the game.
The division-winning Raiders had defeated Central Catholic 16-2 in the opening round.
The Raiders (15-8), who have won 13 consecutive games, will travel to Pine-Richland in quarterfinal round action Tuesday.
"We played some tough teams early in the season," said Raiders coach Wayne Jaeckle. "We played the (Michigan) state champion and the runner-up.
"We're Division 2 but we played teams like Mt. Lebanon and Sewickley Academy. It seems to have gotten us ready now," he added.
Shaler 12, Butler 8 -
Butler's inaugural season in the WPSLA came to a close Saturday when it dropped this Division 3 decision to the Titans in the first round.
Josh Veith had three goals and one assist, Bucky Holt and Luke Werner two goals each and Zach Reiser a goal and assist for the Tornado.
B.J. Tipton added a pair of assists for Butler (6-4).
"We really did well this year," said Butler coach Chaz Boltz. "There were two other first year teams and they were both 1-8 and we finished third and made the playoffs.
"We have 15 freshmen on this team so this is their first varsity season. It bodes well for them. They won't have to wait two or three years to understand what it's like in the playoffs," Boltz added.
At the team's banquet on Sunday, Vieth (45 goals, 17 assists) was named the Offensive MVP, Rich Gigliotti was the Defensive MVP and Tipton was the team MVP (43 goals, 27 assists).
Slippery Rock's Clint Orloski, Travis Sarver and Dan Sommers each earned a medal at Saturday's District 10 Class AAA Championships.Orloski placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 32.42 seconds, Sarver was seventh in the 330 hurdles (42.45) and Sommers eighth in the shot put (46 feet, 1½ inches).
