Choral director is hit at Mars
ADAMS TWP - Robin Lind wants to find vowels a home.
The director of choral activities at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Lawrence County, visited two chorus classes at Mars High School on Friday to share her expertise with students.
After explaining that musical critiques should be taken seriously but not personally, the affable Lind told students where in their mouths to "locate" vowels for best pitch and intonation.
"You must find a home for the vowels," Lind said.
The students attempted to do so to the Mozart tune "Lacrimosa." On the many vowel sounds in the piece, Lind told students to hold onto the first sound that escapes their mouths without letting it sag.
"Almost all singers do the same thing with vowels, and they go out of tune," said Lind.
She also told students not to think about the next note they will sing, or the current note will dip in pitch. She proved her theory on the alto and bass sections, having them sing "Lacrimosa" in their own way, then again while only thinking about the note currently being sung. The difference was amazing.
"You can only think one thing at a time," Lind said. "The minute you are not in the moment, you lose pitch."
Bryn Hollen, a Mars junior and choral soprano, appreciated Lind's college-level advice.
"I learned a lot about vowel placement," said Hollen. "I really think it benefited our chorus."
Steve Fusaro, one of a five-man bass section, said he didn't mind standing and singing the e flat requested of him by Lind.
"I thought she was very insightful," said Fusaro. "It's always nice to get a new perspective."
For her part, Lind was impressed with the quality of the two classes.
"I love their energy and openness to try new things and their desire to excel," Lind said.
She also told students that singing at Mars for choral director Dane Skroupa would prove to be an asset in the future.
"He is so highly thought of in the state, district and region," said Lind. "When you go to college and say you went to Mars, (choral personnel) will say 'Oh! I know you must have a good voice.'"
Lind's visit was paid for by a grant from the Mars Area Foundation for Educational Exellence.
