Backstrom poised to win section title

Butler's Ike Backstrom won two matches at the Section 2-AAA boys tennis tournament Tuesday at Lakevue Athletic Club.

The wins give Backstrom a chance to capture the section title today against North Allegheny's Mike Combotto.

Butler's Brad Straub will also be playing for something this afternoon when he plays Seneca Valley's Andy Zipf. The winner will grab third place in the section tournament and will advance to the WPIAL playoffs, which will be held Monday at a site and time to be determined.

Today's action is scheduled for 2 p.m. at North Allegheny High School, though poor weather could force the action back to Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia.

Here are Backstrom and Straub's results from Tuesday's matches. Both received first-round byes.

North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 0-The Raiders dropped this section contest by scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-18. Adam Beebe tallied seven kills and Mike Coyne added four aces for Seneca (3-2, 2-2).Montour 3, Butler 2 -The Golden Tornado (2-4, 1-3) received 18 points from Garrett Rettig, but suffered a 25-15, 16-25, 29-31, 25-21, 15-9 loss.Shawn Vincent had 18 assists, Chris Erdos had 17 passes and 17 kills, and Ricky Gonzales had 12 kills. Montour won the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-21.
