Tornado sweep through Titans
BUTLER TWP - While having depth is always a crucial aspect for a track team, it never hurts to have a few hammers.
Both Butler boys and girls squads swept the field events in Wednesday's meet to down Shaler 105-45 and 92-58, respectively.
Tyrell Sales won all three throwing events and Calvin Littlejohn all three jumps to highlight the Tornado win, while on the girls side, Sarah Thiebaud swept the jumping events and Tara Maxwell won the shot put and discus for the girls.
"The field events definitely picked us up," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris. "I told the girls in the locker room they would have to step it up against a team like Shaler.
"Losing all three relays, you have to," he added.
The boys responded quite well after losing a tough 78-72 decision to North Hills last week.
"We had some people banged up and some that missed the meet for other reasons," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "There were a couple of events we were just short an inch or two or a second."
Sales helped the Tornado bounce back with his throws in the shot put (48 feet, 1½ inches), discus (167-4) and javelin (153-1), while Littlejohn contributed with wins in the high jump, long jump (21-8) and triple jump (43-2).
Sales' toss in the discus bettered his best last season by more than five feet.
"He had a nice series," said Schontz. "When you watch it as an official, you never know how it goes, but he kept everything in the center of gravity this time."
Luke Renwick also won a pair of events, the 100 and 200 runs.
"I was excited that we swept the 100, the 200, and the 400 relay won," said Schontz.
Marcus Wesner won the pole vault on the boys side while Emily Chiappini won the girls event. Sarah Rehm captured the javelin to round out the remaining field events winners for Butler.
Thiebaud took the high jump (5-0), long jump (15-1) and triple jump (33-11½) while Maxwell had tosses of 32-8 in the shot put and 99-0 in the discus.
"She won those two events and hadn't thrown the javelin until today and finished second," said Harris.
In the depth department, sophomore Kendall Butch came up big with three second-places: the high jump, triple jump and pole vault.
Harris pointed out Tess Crispin's second-place finish in the 400 as a key aspect of the meet.
"That brought us close to the same score in the track events early in the meet," said Harris.
Those three points helped Butler to take a lead (21-20) it would never relinquish.
But Schontz knows that in this section, victories will not come easy for either team.
"For teams not as talented, you want to be overwhelming because you want to build the confidence of the young kids," said Schontz.
"We have to keep peaking. The Seneca Valley meet will not be easy, and then we have North Allegheny after that. You can't take Pine-Richland and Hampton for granted, either.
"What you're starting to see in track is what you've seen from other sports: a lot of teams getting stronger."
