Mrs. Sarah Jane Spohn

Mrs. Sarah Jane Spohn, 68, of the Fenelton area

died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the Butler Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Housewife, mother, former Real Estate Salesperson, and dedicated MARINE CORPS wife was born May 22, 1935, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Harry E. and Margaret (Dunn) Hurst.

She graduated in June 1953 from Langley High School, which is in the Sheraden area of Pittsburgh. She was inducted into the National Honor Society during her senior year.

Mrs. Spohn married Alfred N. Spohn, Jr. of Butler on Aug. 9, 1958, in a military wedding at Holy Innocence Church in Sheraden. They were married by MARINE Corps Chaplain, Fr. Lawrence Wiest, OFM, Cap., a friend of the family. At the time of her death the Spohns had been married for 45 years.

She was a secretary at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. from 1953 to 1960 and held the same position in various companies during the years she traveled with her Marine husband. Once she settled down in the Butler area with her husband and family, she attended BC3 and took real estate courses.

After passing the State test, she became a Real Estate salesperson with the West Real Estate Agency of Pittsburgh from 1976 until 1991. She and her husband worked together in an in-home Real Estate office. After turning in her Real Estate license due to illness in 1991, she continued with secretarial duties for her husband.

Also upon moving to Butler, she took a required course at BC3 and became a counselor with the original Rape Center, CORA.

Mrs. Spohn's hobbies and interests during her lifetime consisted of being a Cub and Girl Scout leader for many years. She also enjoyed traveling with her two sisters, cooking, reading, and baby sitting her grandchildren.

Her husband, Alfred, survives her. Also surviving is one son, Michael A. Spohn and his wife Kelli of Butler; two daughters: Suzanne M. Spohn of Pittsburgh, and Karen McCreary and her husband, Tom, of Butler; and her grandchildren, Jonathon and Haley McCreary, and Jesse, Levi, and Colton Spohn, all of Butler. She is also survived by a sister, Gail Mazeski, and her husband, Ed, of Florida, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Muser.

SPOHN - Friends of Sarah Jane Spohn, who died Thursday, April 1, 2004, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.The family asks that memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Program of the Visiting Nurses of Butler, 154 Hindman Road, Butler, PA 16001.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
