Tornado track teams take two wins from Knoch
BUTLER TWP - The Butler and Knoch track teams felt good about their performances Tuesday - even when the weather was bad.
Despite the rainy, windy and cold conditions, both squads kicked off the dual meet season and walked away very optimistic.
The Butler boys won 88-62 over the Knights while the Tornado girls prevailed 114-36.
"When you have some bad weather and do well, that's always something to build on," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "You know you can always jump higher, throw farther, run faster in drier weather."
"I was pleased," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris. "It was a cold day and I told the kids it was not going to be an easy meet."
In the boys meet, Butler swept all seven field events, including Calvin Littlejohn's wins in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), long jump (21-7) and triple jump (43-3), and Tyrell Sales' victories in the shot put (49-5) and discus (124-7).
"We've been moving Calvin around and he responded," said Schontz. "The kids have all been cooperative. This is a hard-working team."
The Knights had a double winner in Bob Rummel, who captured the 110 hurdles (15.2 seconds) and 300 hurdles (41.2). Tyler Park won the 400, Kyle Reeping the 800 and Matt Friday the 200.
Those three, along with Dave Rickard, won the 1,600 relay, which helped the Knights finish the meet in strong fashion.
"We're very excited," said Knoch boys coach Wess Brahler. "We have some tremendous athletes and the boys are working hard. They're doing what we asked.
"We had (personal records) everywhere. We scored (62) points against Butler, so it's like a victory for us," Brahler added.
"We expected Knoch to be much improved over last year," said Schontz. "We had to have our kids ready to perform. I'm glad we got the win. I give credit to Knoch."
On the girls side, Butler won 16 of the 18 events, thanks in part to Sarah Thiebaud and Tara Maxwell, who won five field events between them.
Thiebaud won all three jumps - 5-2 in the high, 14-11 in the long and 34-6½ in the triple - and Maxwell captured the shot put (31-4) and discus (89-11).
The Tornado girls also swept the 800 and 3,200 runs and captured all three relays.
Knoch got its individual wins from Lauren Wiefling in the 100 hurdles (17.4) and Kerri Melis in the javelin (106-3).
"We got a lot of good efforts," said Knoch girls coach Tom Hoffmann, who like Brahler and Scott is in his first season at the helm.
"We had some adverse conditions against a very good team like Butler. We just have a young team. We're coming together," Hoffmann added.
