School district reports revenue losses from real estate appeals

BUTLER TWP - The Butler School District has lost more than $100,000 in revenue this year because of real estate tax appeals and exonerations.

That loss was reported Monday night at the Butler School Board meeting, when board members approved several more requests for change in tax status.

The tax reductions and exonerations list includes:

Christ's Outreach Community Church for $1,445 for a parking lot that had been previously taxed. The parking lot is only used for church purposes, making it tax exempt.

Center Presbyterian Senior Housing for $17,186.87 in refunds on its 2003 property taxes. The center was found to be tax-exempt by the courts after it appealed its 2003 assessment.

Citizens National Bank for $3,000 in reductions to its fair market value. It now will be taxed at $325,000.

First Seneca Bank and Trust for $1,300 in reductions to its fair market value. It now will be taxed at $400,000.

All of the requests were granted at the advice of the district's solicitor, Tom King.

Superintendent Ed Fink said there have been 14 requests for reassessments or exonerations this year. Of those, all but three have been granted.

Those three are still being litigated and could result in an additional $6,112 in revenue loss for the district.

If all 14 are approved, the district will have lost $110,349.92 in revenue it was counting on, Fink said. The loss will impact the budget planning process for the 2005-06 school year, which is due to begin in April.

"We just want the board to be aware of the impact these assessments are having on our district," Fink said.
