Symphony's concert features SRU student

The Butler County Symphony Orchestra will present its March 20 concert featuring soprano Glenna Marie Cypher and Charles Martin's slides.

In addition, a four-man quartet, Acoustic Shadows of the Blue & Gray, will present Civil War era songs.

The concert will be under the direction of Elisabeth Heath-Charles.

Cypher is the winner of the symphony's Young Artist's competition for 2004. This year, there were 10 college-age contestants.

Cypher is a student at Slippery Rock University, where she studies voice with Colleen Neubert. A native of Slippery Rock, Cypher she went to high school in Mandelein, Ill., a suburb of Chicago.

Upon her return to this area, she needed to lose the Great Lakes accent she had acquired. She said a singer should not reveal a discernible accent.

She will present her senior recital at SRU on April 2 and will graduate this spring. She is auditioning for graduate school."My student experience has changed my life," she said. "I owe a great deal to my professors here and especially to Dr. Colleen Neubert."She is thankful to the Butler County Symphony Orchestra for providing her with her first orchestral experience.She will sing the orchestra "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" from Puccini's La Boheme and "Cavatina" from Donizetti's DonPasquale.Also during the concert, Martin will provide slides of the site of the Battle of Gettysburg simultaneously with the music by Randy Edelman, the composer of "Gettysburg." He is well-known as a composer of film and TV scores."Gettysburg" was adapted for the concert stage as a suite.In keeping with the Civil War theme, Acoustic Shadows of the Blue & Gray, a four-man quartet, will provide pre-concert and intermission music consisting of Civil War era songs.In addition, the 11th and 54th Volunteer Infantry and the John T. Crawford Sons of Union Veterans will appear in military clothes to greet the audience and answer questions.The orchestra will play "Jubilee" by George Whitefield Chadwick, a New England composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Tchaikovsky's "Little Russian" Symphony No. 2.
