After decades, supermarket to close

Mars Supermarket, a downtown staple for decades, announced that it will be closed by Feb. 16.
Doors will be shut by Feb. 16

MARS — A staple of downtown Mars for more than four decades under various names, the Mars Supermarket will close in February, officials said this week.

According to Gary Muska, who has owned and operated the store for the past 20 years, employees were told Thursday that the business will be closing on or before Feb. 16.

According to a press release, sales have declined in recent years, and the day-to-day of running a grocery store has become too challenging. There also is a decreased need for such a store in the borough as other shopping options exist on Route 228 and in Cranberry and Adams townships.

Muska, who owns the market along with his wife and brother-in-law, and who has two grown children who work at the store, said, “we won't be completely happy until all of our employees land somewhere new. A few employees may choose to retire.

“Luckily, the job market is strong in the area, so we're hopeful that anyone seeking new employment will land on their feet.”
