SRU teams split in PSAC openers

East Stroudsburg closed the first half on a 23-12 run, led by 10 at halftime and rolled past visiting Slippery Rock, 82-66, Monday night in a mutual PSAC men’s basketball opener.

SRU (2-5, 0-1) never got its deficit out of double digits in the second half.

The Rock committed 26 turnovers after entering the game averaging 12.8 turnovers on the season. Preseason All-PSAC West player Micah Till was limited to just seven points, five rebounds and one field goal.

John Warren II paced SRU with 13 points while Julius Palmer had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Vinny Lasley 11 points and seven boards, Jared Armstrong 11 points.

SRU (women) 75, East Stroudsburg 68 — Brooke Hinderliter scored a career-high 33 points for SRU (3-4, 1-0). She sank all 11 of her free throw attempts.

Hinderliter is within two points of moving into the top 20 on the program’s all-time scoring list.

Ciara Patterson added 13 points and Daeja Quick 10. Patterson also contributed four steals and three assists.

Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson, playing in her first game since sustaining a preseason injury, tallied six points, three rebounds and two steals.

Both SRU teams return home to host West Chester on Saturday. The women’s game is at 1 p.m., the men’s game at 3 p.m. at Morrow Field House.
