Mars' Sicher advances in WPIAL golf

In a WPIAL Class AAA individual golf semifinal Tuesday at Youghiogheny Country Club, Mars' Chris Sicher advanced with a 78.

The cut was 82, which is what Mars' Shea Moffa shot, along with three others. He failed to advance after losing in a playoff.

Peters Township's Parker Johnson topped the field by carding a 74.

The other semifinal, involving golfers from both Seneca Valley and Butler, was scheduled Tuesday at Hannahstown Golf Club, but was postponed due to inclement weather. It will now take place Thursday at the same site.

The WPIAL Championship will be held Tuesday at Oakmont Country Club.

Riverview 241, Freeport 246 — David Gaspersic led the Yellowjackets with a 43, but Freeport slipped to 9-6 overall, 8-3 in section matches.

Cross Country

Harley Pflugh placed first with a time of 21 minutes, 15 seconds, to lead Slippery Rock's girls to wins over Hickory (25-30) and Karns City (15-48).

In the boys' meet, the Rockets were led by Christian Sosa's third-place time of 18:16 as Slippery Rock defeated Karns City (15-46), but fell to Hickory (22-33).

KC's Elijah Evans and Sara Weiland paced the Gremlin boys and girls, respectively, with times of 20:28 and 23:52.

KC's boys are 3-3 while the girls are 2-3.

Freeport sweeps — Maggie Hollobaugh won the girls race for the Yellowjackets, who defeated Highlands 24-33 and Ellis School 15-48. Freeport's boys defeated Highlands 21-36 and Redeemer Lutheran 15-50.

Girls Volleyball

Kerrie Fitzpatrick tallied 20 service points and 22 assists in Knoch's sweep of New Castle.

The Knights made quick work of the Red Hurricane by scores of 25-4, 25-3 and 25-8.

Kennedy Christy had 12 kills, Skylar Burkett 25 points and five kills and Hannah Rowe nine kills for the undefeated Knights (9-0, 7-0).

Freeport 3, Deer Lakes 0 — The Yellowjackets (6-1, 6-0) won the match 25-14, 25-15, 25-18 as Sarah Hettich had six kills and nine blocks, Lauren Lampus 10 service points and seven kills.

Allison DeJidas contributed five kills, six service points and two blocks, Isabella Russo six kills, five blocks and two service points. The Yellowjackets play at Neshannock Wednesday.

Cranberry 3, Karns City 1 — The Gremlins won the first set 25-21, then lost 25-23, 25-19, 25-16. Emily Wolfe had 10 digs and six kills, Rayna Miller eight kills, Emily Huff seven kills, Emma Clark five kills and seven digs.

Mackenzie Dunn had six back-row kills and 17 digs, Alyssa Stitt five aces and Kaley Byerly 11 digs.

Moniteau 3, Venango Catholic 0 — Samantha Broerman contributed four blocks and three kills to this 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 victory for the Warriors.

Dolcey Shunk added five digs.

Slippery Rock 3, Franklin 1 — The Rockets won the match 25-15, 25-11, 17-25, 25-14 as Morgan Malinski had 10 kills and 14 assists, Tiffany Madison seven blocks, Taylor Balint 25 digs.

Boys Soccer

Dakota King scored twice and Austin Fahlor recorded a goal and an assist in Karns City's 3-0 triumph over Redbank Valley.

Owen Collwell also had an assist. Jake Weckerly recorded his fourth shutout in net this season.

The Gremlins improved to 10-0.

Mars 6, Highlands 0 — Austin Rocke and Dane Beller both scored two goals for the Planets (9-1-1, 9-0). Shane Lisman and Matt Olsen found the net once.

North Hills 2, Knoch 1 — Nathaniel Webb scored for the Knights (3-7-2, 2-6-1) in this section loss on the road.

Butler 2, Central Catholic 1 (OT) — Tate Mohney scored both goals for the Golden Tornado (6-2-1), the second coming on a free kick with two minutes remaining in the first overtime.

Landon Mohney assisted on Butler's first goal, which tied the game in the 70th minute.

Girls Soccer

Hunter Dittman and Maura King both scored to lead Karns City to a 2-0 victory over Redbank Valley.

The Gremlins are now 7-1 on the season.

Private Schools

Elijah White scored two goals while Jackson Vosmaer had a goal and assist in Portersville Christian School's 4-1 soccer win over Heartland Christian Academy.

PCS also defeated First Baptist Christian School 3-1 to improve to 11-1 on the season.
