Mars lacrosse falls in overtime

Planets drop 12-11 decision in PIAA semifi nals

MECHANICSBURG — Strath Haven scored less than a minute into overtime to end Mars' season with a 12-11 decision in a PIAA Class 2A boys lacrosse semifinal playoff game Tuesday afternoon at Cumberland Valley High School.

The deciding goal came moments after the Planets were whistled for a push, allowing the Panthers (19-5) to play with a man advantage.

The Planets (19-2) had led 7-4 midway through the second quarter on the strength of three goals apiece from Cade Hetzler and Hayden Vasbinder.

“We were moving the ball well early and doing well in transition,” said Mars coach Bob Marcoux. “Will Scurci made a lot of good saves. He was probably the biggest reason we built that lead.”

The Planets' edge was 7-5 at halftime and that was the score when the first of two lightning delays halted the action minutes into the second half.

The second delay, with 9:12 left in the game, came at a good time for the Planets.

“We were down (10-8) and it gave us a chance to get back in the locker room and regroup,” said Marcoux. “The kids came out re-energized after that second delay.”

The Planets scored three of the final four goals in regulation to knot the game at 11-11, forcing the extra period.

Anthony Grieco tallied three goals for the Planets and Michael Doyle added two. Hetzler contributed three assists.

Scurci stopped nine shots for Mars.

It marked the second straight year that Mars reached the state semifinals. The Planets dropped a 20-9 decision to West Chester Henderson a year ago.

Tuesday's game was the final high school contest for Mars' 18 seniors.

“Our seniors fought hard for us for four years,” said Marcoux. “We lost two 1-goal games this year. I couldn't be prouder of this team.”
