Butler rallies for win

Volleyball gets 1st state victory; Warrior baseball also triumphs

Butler dropped a tight first game, then rallied for a 3-1 PIAA Class 3A boys volleyball victory over Altoona Tuesday night at Forest Hills.

The 25-27, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 win marked the first state tournament win in the program's history.

“They were bigger than us, but we play good floor defense and limited our unforced errors,” Butler coach Lew Liparulo said.

Tyler Rankin had 45 assists for the Golden Tornado (18-4). Nash Bryan had 21 kills, Cody Schnur 14 kills and three blocks.

“Cody had seven kills in one set during that third game. That flurry really picked up the tempo for us,” Liparulo said.

Butler will likely take on undefeated North Allegheny in the next round on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Three of the Tornado's four losses are to the Tigers.

“We will have to play a near-perfect game to beat them, make them work for everything they get,” Liparulo said. “But our kids are up for the challenge.”

Baseball

Moniteau (16-5) pushed across a run in the seventh inning to defeat Chestnut Ridge, 2-1, and win the District 5/8/9 championship.

Chestnut Ridge ends its season at 13-5.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Hunter Fitzingo doubled for the Warriors. Jake Jewart doubled him home. Jewart had two doubles on the day.

Fitzingo started on the mound for Moniteau and pitched into the sixth. Chance Nagy worked the final 1.1 innings and got the victory.

Moniteau returns to action Monday against Bald Eagle, the second place team out of District 6, at a site and time to be determined.
