Court Sentences

These defendants were sentenced Thursday in Butler County Judge William Shaffer's courtroom:

William H. Anderson, 44, of Butler was sentenced to 5 days to 6 months in Butler County Prison followed by one year of probation, on charges of misdemeanor driving under the influence and resisting arrest. He also was ordered to pay court costs and a $300 fine, and complete 60 hours of community service, the Alcohol Highway Safety School, the Victim Impact Panel and complete the county litter pickup program.He pleaded guilty Feb. 14.Butler police filed the charges after Anderson was found passed out behind the wheel of a running flat-bed truck that was pulled onto the sidewalk in the 500 block of Federal Street. Once awoken, police said Anderson became combative and refused to get out of the vehicle, hitting an officer when he tried to pull him out. The officer then deployed a Taser, before Anderson eventually surrendered. Following his arrest, Anderson gave police a bogus name, police said.Officers took him to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology reports subsequently showed he had a metabolite indicating heroin use, documents said.

Mary J. Putnam, 50, of Butler was sentenced to time served to 24 months minus one day in Butler County Prison, and was immediately paroled on a misdemeanor simple assault count, after being charged with attacking her longtime boyfriend with a wooden statue in May 2017. She also was ordered to pay court costs and undergo mental health and drug and alcohol assessments and recommended treatment.She pleaded guilty Sept. 13.Butler police filed the charges after an incident at her apartment in the 200 block of West Brady Street on May 14. 2017, where they say she assaulted her boyfriend with a wooden statue. He reported that the couple returned home around 4 a.m., when Putnam became upset and started throwing items, damaging the property in the process, before assaulting him. The alleged attack left the victim “bleeding profusely,” according to a police affidavit, with an unspecified head injury.

Jeffrey L. Geiger, 45, of Ellwood City, was sentenced to 6 months of probation on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. He also was ordered to pay court costs and $500 in restitution. That probation was then vacated by Shaffer after Geiger paid the restitution in full.He pleaded no contest April 16.Cranberry Township police filed the charges after Geiger was found in possession of $2,200 in cash that he collected from a customer in December 2015 and never turned over to his employer, Junk King, according to court records.

David R. Coleman, 50, of Butler, was sentenced to 6 months of probation on charges of misdemeanor DUI and summary driving on a suspended license. He was also ordered to pay court cost and $500 in fines, complete 60 hours of community service, attend the Alcohol Highway Safety School, the Victim Impact Panel and complete the county litter pickup program.Coleman was charged with DUI and summary traffic violations after a traffic stop at North Monroe and Kittanning streets Jan. 19. He pleaded guilty April 23.State police filed the charges after Coleman's vehicle was pulled over for making an illegal turn. Field sobriety tests indicated impairment, according to court documents, and police took him to the barracks for a breath test. He recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.089 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.Coleman awaits formal arraignment June 5 on charges of felony aggravated assault, fleeing or attempting to elude police, misdemeanor counts of child endangerment, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest and a list of other traffic violations after an incident March 30 that began when he allegedly ran a stop sign at South Chestnut and West Diamond streets and ended on Whitestown Road where police said he rammed a trooper's cruiser after leading police on a chase.
