Grove City wins Cup, 51-21

GREENVILLE — Wesley Schools became the fourth Grove City running back to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season Saturday as the Wolverines won the Mercer County Cup with a 51-21 football victory over Thiel.

Schools rushed for a career-high 271 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. He finished the season with 1,266 yards and joined GCC alumni Doug Steiner, R.J. Bowers and Shane Kaclik as a 1,000-yard rusher at the school.

Quarterback Randall Labrie rushed for 64 yards and two TDs. He also threw for 182 yards and a pair of scores.

Seneca Valley graduate Sam Henson, a sophomore linebacker, returned an interception 60 yards for a score. Freshman safety Patrick Mark had 15 tackles and Karns City graduate and junior linebacker Ethan Conto had nine tackles and a forced fumble.

Henson’s interception return for a touchdown was Grove City’s first in five years.

The Wolverines won four of their final seven games to go 4-6 for the season.

The Wol;verines now lead the Mercer Cup series, 22-12.

Basketball

The Butler County Community College men slipped to 0-4 with a 112-52 loss to Garrett Community College and a 136-84 setback to Allegany (Md.) over the weekend.

Joel Stutz scored 13 points, Brendan Record 12 and Kaden Rock 10 in the first game. Record had 22, Stutz 19 and Rock 14 in the second contest.

The BC3 women (1-3) fell 65-56 to Garrett despite 29 points and 25 rebounds from Mackenzie Craig. Carly Burdett had 13 points, Lydia Roth 13 assists.

The Lady Pioneers dropped an 80-67 decision to Allegany as Craig scored 39 points and grabbed 28 rebounds. Lydia Roth had 15 points and 26 assists.

Slippery Rock’s men jumped out to a 2-0 start with wins of 67-55 over West Virginia Wesleyan and 75-64 over Glenville State. Bruce Spruell scored 27 points and had three assists against Wesleyan while Micah Till had 20 points and 12 rebounds against Glenville.

The Rock women are 0-2 after a 78-72 loss to Lincoln and an 82-55 loss to Virginia State. Brooke Hinderliter had 18 points and eight rebounds against Lincoln while Ciara Patterson had 14 points and four assists against Virginia State.

Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson had seven points in the Lincoln loss.

Both Rock teams open PSAC play with a home twinbill against Shippensburg this Saturday.

Volleyball

SRU ended its season with a 3-1 loss at Mercyhurst. Scores were 25-22, 29-31, 25-21, 25-14. Shayla Ray led The Rock (11-19) with 10 kills and six blocks.
