Raiders, CWNC in quarterfinals

Seneca Valley’s scoring chances were going for naught in Saturday’s WPIAL Class AAAA first-round boys soccer playoff game against Allderdice.

Finally, with 10 minutes left in the game, senior midfielder Caleb Cekella found the right angle — and height.

His goal lifted the Raiders to a 1-0 win at NexTier Stadium.

“Jackson Wotus got the ball to Caleb and he put a long shot over the head of the goalkeeper, who was pretty tall at about 6-4,” said Raider coach George Williams. “We beat a skilled team today. Allderdice has a really good striker, but our defense and goalkeeper, Will Gallagher, kept them from getting the ball to the back of the net.”

Gallagher finished the game with eight saves for the Raiders (11-3-2).

SV’s win matches it up in Wednesday’s quarterfinal against section foe Pine-Richland (12-4-2), which defeated Central Catholic, 2-1, on Saturday.

“We beat Pine-Richland the first time we played them (1-0),” added Williams, “then lost to them the second time (2-0). It promises to be another tight one, but we’ve got a lot of momentum right now.”

C.W. North Catholic 10, Quigley Catholic 0 — Quigley’s defense kept the Trojans at bay for a while.

Then the floodgates opened.

Bryce Kopchak’s goal nearly 20 minutes into the game began a scoring spree that saw three CWNC players finish with a hat trick as the top-seeded Trojans easily dismantled the Spartans in a WPIAL Class A first-round playoff at NexTier Stadium.

Joe Kearney, Ryan Rothermel and Nick Milas all scored three goals.

“They (Spartans) started the game with 10 guys behind the ball and contained us for a while,” said CWNC coach Aaron Kelly. “But after we got up, they had to stretch things out a bit and that opened things up for us.”

The Trojans (17-1) will face Bentworth (13-6), a 2-0 victor against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, in a quarterfinal playoff Wednesday.

Riverside 6, Freeport 1 — Bryce Hanby’s goal on a penalty kick in the first half pulled the Yellowjackets even, but the Panthers tallied five second-half goals to pull away in this Class AA first-round playoff at North Allegheny’s Newman Stadium.

“I knew nothing about Riverside coming in,” admitted Freeport coach Dave Teorsky, “other than they scored a lot of goals, but also gave up some during the season. I thought it would be more of a back-and-forth game, a comparable match-up.

“We’ve always been a second-half team and we felt good about where we were at the half,” he added. “We had some breakdowns in the second half and it’s very confusing for us, to play our worst half of soccer in the most important game of the season.”

Despite the defeat, the Yellowjackets can hold their heads high. They finished 12-6 on the season.

“Our seniors finished with the most wins (47) over a four-year stretch in school history,” Teorsky said. “It was an early exit for us, but I’m proud of the guys.”
