Rock baseball splits DH
Slippery Rock University's baseball team withstood a rally by Bloomsburg to defeat the Huskies 5-4 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Critchfield Park.
Bloomsburg prevailed 14-6 in the first contest.
The Rock (18-13) led the second game 5-1 entering the seventh inning before Bloomsburg's Damin Muth clubbed a 3-run home run off SRU reliever Preston Falascino. Two of the runs were charged to Trevor Adkins, who started the inning on the mound.
Falascino avoided further damage, recording the final two outs to earn the save.
Tyler Markovic's strong start earned him the victory. He allowed just one run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
James Divosevic hit a 2-run home run for The Rock in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Huskies scored eight runs in the top of the ninth frame in Game 1. Seven of the runs were charged to reliever Alex Worthington, who took the loss for SRU.
The Rock totaled 12 hits in the game, including four extra-base hits.
Catcher Tyler Walters hit a home run and Seneca Valley graduate Carson Kessler had two hits.
Women's Lacrosse
Tia Torchia's five goals paced SRU to a 13-9 victory against visiting Gannon.
Caitlynn Palladino and Bre Vodde both added three goals.
Emily Bitka was credited with the win in goal after making four saves for The Rock (11-3, 6-3).
