Mars library hosts art show evening

MARS — The Mars Public Library in partnership with the Cranberry Artists Network will present “A One Night Stand Art Show & Sale” from 6 to 9 p.m. April 1 at the library, 107 Grand Ave.

The show is for one night only. Admission is free.

Guests can view about 45 works by area artists and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. Any proceeds benefit the library.

Helping library director Vince Gadrix coordinate the event is Marcy Bogdanich, who is a member of the Cranberry Artists’ Network.

“The artists’ entry fees will go directly to the library,” Bogdanich said. “It’s a way for them to gain exposure.”

The artwork being submitted includes handmade jewelry, three-dimensional pieces, ceramics, pastel and oil paintings, and a digital piece.

The event will be a juried show. The Friends of the Library group will provide $100 to the overall winner of the show, $75 to the second place winner and $50 to third place. An honorable mention piece will receive $20.

Judge for the show will be Erin Sloan, an art teacher at Mars High School.

Sloan, along with some students, is helping to hang the artwork, said Bogdanich.

“Several students are going around with her while she judges so they learn the parameters,” Bogdanich said.

The Mars School District is loaning its display boards for the show.

“We’re excited about involving students in this process,” Bogdanich said.

Bogdanich estimated the works will be sold in a price range from $90 to $400.

But she stressed that the evening is open to everyone, including those who want to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and peruse art alongside their friends and neighbors.

“This is for the community,” Bogdanich said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

She said if the show proves successful, more artists will be invited to enter pieces in the future.

Gadrix said in addition to holding a new fundraiser, he was interested in promoting art in and around Mars.

“After all, the library is the center of creativity in the community,” he said.

Gadrix hopes the one night show will prove popular, and become an annual fundraiser for the library as well as a fun event for residents.

“We would just like to make it a successful event so it’s something that people will look forward to doing in the coming years,” Gadrix said.

The Cranberry Artists Network has three shows per year: two members shows which are the fall and winter shows, and one during Cranberry Community Days.
