Members of the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic girls basketball team celebrate after beating Blackhawk, 65-36, for the WPIAL 4A title at the Petersen Events Center Friday night. It's the first district title for the Trojanettes since 2011. North Catholic did win the PIAA Class A title last season.
CWNC girls snare WPIAL 4A crown

PITTSBURGH — Been there.

Now they've done that.

Buoyed by a monster performance from senior center Sam Breen, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic cruised to a 65-36 victory over Blackhawk Friday night in the WPIAL Class 4A girls basketball championship game at the Petersen Events Center.

Breen scored 34 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, and had six assists for the Trojanettes (23-2), who erased the frustration of losing consecutive WPIAL title games the past two years.

“We talked about that coming down here,” CWNC coach Molly Rottmann said. “Our two seniors (Breen and Kylie Huffman) have done everything else ... school scoring record, 1,000 point scorer, section championship, state championship.

“They deserved to get a WPIAL championship banner to put up in their school and now they've got one.”

And they got it without a whole lot of drama.

A trey by Blackhawk senior Breanna Hoover pulled the Cougars (16-9) within 23-17 with 4:57 left in the first half. The Trojanettes had taken a quick 10-point advantage earlier.

Huffman and Breen answered Hoover's shot with treys of their own on consecutive possessions as CWNC opened up a 29-17 lead.

The dam broke at that point as those 3-point goals also kicked off a 31-5 run. The Trojanettes led 54-22 with 2:45 left in the third period.

Their biggest lead was 63-28 with five minutes to play.

“I never thought we'd win by this type of margin, not the way Blackhawk can bury the three's,” Rottmann said. “But our girls came out tonight hungry for this. We jumped out to a 7-0 lead and just settled in.”

Huffman complemented Breen's performance with 18 points and nine rebounds of her own. Tess Myers had seven rebounds as CWNC enjoyed a whopping 48-22 edge on the boards.

“We weren't nervous tonight. We were excited,” Huffman said. “Sam commands a lot of attention on the floor and it makes things easier for me.”

Blackhawk entered the game with a school-record 240 treys on the season, but sank just 11 of 49 shots from the field.

“We knew this would be a tough match-up for us,” Hoover said. “But we probably played our worst game tonight.”

Blackhawk coach Steve Lodovico said the size of the Trojanettes' inside players took its toll on the Cougars' outside shooting game.“Sam is 6-foort-2 and has those long arms,” he said. “We like to penetrate and dish, but her and their other big girls made that difficult to execute.“This game wasn't just Sam for them. Every girl they put on the floor played well. They just plain beat us. We couldn't get the stops defensively when we needed them.”They couldn't get the Trojanettes to turn the ball over, either.“We usually force 20 turnovers a game and I don't think they turned it over more than five times,” Lodovico said. “When we're not taking the ball away, we're in trouble.“When you're playing against three girls taller than six feet and your girls are 5-4, we were in trouble every time they took the ball inside.”That fact wasn't lost on Breen, who now has 2,430 points and 1,148 rebounds in her prep career.“Yeah, we felt like we could dominate in there,” she said. “We always want to take the ball to the basket.“I was hungry to win this title. I wanted it bad. It's something that's eluded us, but not anymore.”Madison Amalia was the only Blackhawk player in double figures, netting 11 points. Tailyn Silver had seven rebounds.Rottmann became only the fifth coach to win six WPIAL titles. Friday's win marked North Catholic's 17th overall, but the first for the school since its relocation to Cranberry Township.“That makes it a little more special,” Rottmann said.BLACKHAWK 36Taylor Lambright 0-2 0-0 0, Tailyn Silver 0-2 2-4 2, MacKenzie Amalia 3-10 2-2 11, Olivia Roberts 1-3 0-0 3, Breanna Hoover 2-12 0-0 5, Mady Aulbach 2-10 0-2 4, Vanessa Potts 0-1 2-2 2 Totals: 11-49 6-10 36.CW NORTH CATHOLIC 65Ashley Robbins 1-2 0-0 3, Emma Pospisil 1-3 0-0 2, Cassie Foster 0-1 0-0 0, Amanda Bucklew 0-1 0-0 0, Kylie Huffman 7-8 2-2 18, Lucy Waskeiwicz 0-2 0-0 0, Tess Myers 1-7 3-4 6, Dani Short 1-3 0-0 2, Belle O'Hara 0-1 0-0 0, Sam Breen 11-23 10-10 34, Lizzy Goetz 0-1 0-0 0.
