NEW MEDICARE

In January 1966, Robert L. Dietrick, manager of the Social Security office in Butler, presents Mayor Arthur J. Megan, left, the first identification card for Medicare issued in the county. Noting the March 31 deadline for enrollment, Deitrick said there are many shut-ins who don’t know about Medicare and should know what is available, if they want to enroll. He estimated that only 65 percent to 70 percent of the eligible individuals in the county were enrolled at the time. Dietrick said enrollment is open to those who were 65 or older by 1965. The hospitalization portion of the plan costs the applicant nothing, but medical coverage costs $3 a month, if the applicant wants it.
