William Martin

William “Bill” Elton Martin, 86, of Harrisville passed away Friday at Grove City Medical Center.

Bill was born Aug. 2, 1930, to the late Elton and Eleanor Sterrett Martin. He was a 1948 graduate of Clintonville High School. Bill was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served from 1952 to 1954. After his service, he worked as a machinist at Cooper Bessemer in Grove City. Bill married his beloved wife, Shirley Osborne Martin, on Dec. 4, 1954; she preceded him in death Dec. 22, 2006.

Bill loved to garden and do yard work, he was always giving out bags of potatoes. He loved to visit with his neighbors and enjoyed the sense of community in Harrisville. He was a founding member of the Harrisville Community Band and played the trumpet, as well as several other instruments. He was a member of the Grove City Masonic Lodge 603 and was on the supervisory committee of Grove City Federal Credit Union. Bill was extremely active in his church, Friendship Presbyterian Church, and loved his church family.

Bill is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Sopher and her husband, Dennis, of Harrisville and Barbara Frankenburg and her husband, Dana, of Grove City; four grandchildren, Samuel Sopher and his wife, Alison, of Midland, Melissa Sopher Williams and her husband, Joshua, of Nanjemoy, Md., Mallory Frankenburg Spiker and her husband, Nathan, of Erie, and Zachary Frankenburg and his girlfriend, Stacey Flack, of Grove City; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Martin and his wife, Judy, of Indianapolis; one sister, Mary Lou Riddle and her husband, Wayne, of Grove City; one brother-in-law, Ralph Osborne and his wife, Ellen, of Grove City; and one sister-in-law, Jean Davis of Harrisville.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Meals.

MARTIN — Family and friends of William “Bill” Elton Martin, who died Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, are welcome from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Jamison Funeral Home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville.

Additional viewing will be from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m. today at the Friendship Presbyterian Church, 870 Franklin Road, Slippery Rock, with the Rev. Donna Yanosy, pastor of Friendship Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill's name to Friendship Presbyterian Church, 870 Franklin Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057, or The Independence Fund, P.O. Box 680370, Charlotte, N.C. 28216, to help wounded veterans.
