Airport receives aid for safety

Farm Show airport, 1 of 23

HARRISBURG — The Butler Farm Show Airport is one of 23 Pennsylvania airports which will receive money from the state to make safety upgrades and to expand operation opportunities, it was announced Monday.

“Maintaining and expanding opportunities in our transportation system includes the more than 400 airports in our state,” Governor Tom Wolf said in a news release. “Hundreds of thousands of jobs are supported by aviation in Pennsylvania, and these investments will help them operate safely, expand to meet demands, or attract more growth.”

Butler Farm Show Airport will receive $135,000 to improve airport drainage, rehabilitate a taxiway and install an access gate and fencing.

“It’s fantastic news for the airport,” said Ken Laughlin, one of the airport managers. “The safety of the public and the airport is the number-one concern, so it’s great news for us. We have wildlife that run across that airport and getting it fenced off will be a lot safer for our pilots.”

Laughlin called the improvements “a process” and said the first step will be announcing the work to attract bids. He said he does not know how long it will take to get all the work done.

Butler Farm Show Airport applied for a grant in 2015, but the stalemate with the state budget delayed the process of getting the grant money.
