Jennie Kathryn Stoneburner

Jennie Kathryn Stoneburner

Jennie Kathryn Stoneburner, 96, of Neville Island, Pa., passed away Tuesday evening at New Haven Court in Butler.

Jennie was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Bea Northrup; and her husband, George Robert Stoneburner.

She is survived by four children, Judith (John) Banks of Butler, Robert Stoneburner of Paynesville, Minn., Susan Short of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Mark (Mary) Stoneburner of Marion, Ohio. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Born Sept. 18, 1919, and raised in Zanesville, Ohio, Jennie was the only child of Harry and Beatrice Northrup.

In 1937, she graduated from Zanesville High School, where she had been a spirit club leader. As a young woman, Jennie worked in sales at the Sears and Roebuck Department Store in Zanesville.

In 1940, she married George Robert “Bob” Stoneburner, who she had met while still in high school. Jennie and Bob moved in 1947 to Coraopolis, where Bob worked for the Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical Co., later the Calgon Corp., and where they raised four children.

Jennie took care of the home and children. She was a wonderful mother and also found time to work outside the home first for the 1960 census and later selling Avon Products, often with youngsters in tow.

After Bob passed away in 1972, and her children were grown, Jennie began working as a secretary for the Pittsburgh Public schools, starting as a school office substitute and eventually accepting a secretarial position at the Pittsburgh Board of Education. She retired from the board of education in 1994 after 22 years of service.

Jennie was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church of Coraopolis, serving on the board of trustees and as elder and deacon at various times. For several years in retirement, she was active with the local AARP and was editor of the organization's newsletter.

Jennie was very musical and enjoyed playing the piano. She loved animals of all kinds and from her youth was known to adopt “pets” from every branch of the animal kingdom.
