Seeing double

Mars senior Steve Castello lays in two points for the Planets during a recent game. Castello has stepped up his game in replacing the injured Alex Gruber so far this season.

ADAMS TWP — For the last couple of seasons, opponents of Mars’ boys basketball team have had to game plan against one Castello.

They now have to contend with two.

Senior forward Steve Castello, twin brother of defending Butler Eagle Boys Player of the Year John Castello, has emerged as a scoring threat to strengthen the Planets’ already-loaded lineup.

The former is averaging 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for Mars (11-4, 7-1) after spending much of last year watching from the bench.

“I got in about eight games last season,” Steve Castello said, “but I wanted to make more of an impact this year. I put a lot of effort into playing AAU in the offseason and got good work in during the open gyms. I made sure I put the work in to improve and it helped me develop my skills more than in past years.”

Steve Castello is one of four Planets averaging double-figures in points per game, joining brother John (18.1), Robby Carmody (20.3) and Christian Schmitt (10.7).

Mars coach Rob Carmody had high hopes for Steve entering the season.

“He didn’t letter last year, but put the time in during the offseason,” he said. “He had a great summer. He was always a decent shooter, but has gained a ton of confidence in his shot.”

Despite his size (6-foot-3) and position, Steve leads the Planets with 33 three-pointers. But his game has evolved into more than just shooting from beyond the arc.

“In last Friday’s game against Burrell (a 73-56 victory), Steve was not shooting well from the outside,” said Coach Carmody. “Instead of staying out there and forcing it, he got on the offensive glass and ended up scoring 20 points. He’s done a better job the last few games of getting inside. His skill set is still emerging and it’s nice to see that maturation.”

With senior forward Alex Gruber missing most of the season so far with injury, Steve Castello’s play has helped to solidify an area that could have been viewed as a weakness by Mars’ opponents.

“His rebounding has been a big factor,” Coach Carmody said. “With Alex out, Steve has had to step into that role.”

“I also take a lot of pride in playing defense,” Steve said. “I’m glad I’ve been able to help the team as much as I have.”

John Castello is well on his way to averaging a double-double in points and rebounds for the third straight season. He is proud of his brother’s emergence for a team with lofty goals.

“He’s been great this season,” he said of Steve. “He is a lot bigger and stronger this year. His blocks and rebounds have helped out a lot.”

And John, who is older by 20 minutes, has given Steve a boost when needed.

“He’s been really supportive,” said Steve. “If I don’t play so well in a game, he gives me pointers and says things that help my confidence.”
