2 SRU football players jailed

They're accused in break-in

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Two Slippery Rock University football players could have been playing in a Division II playoff game Saturday at SRU.

Instead they were in the Butler County Prison.

They are two of four SRU students accused of robbing another student on Thursday. All four are in the county prison on $100,000 bail each.

Julian Durden, 21, of Pittsburgh, Calvert Anderson, 23, of Johnstown, and Robert Brown, 22, of Pittsburgh were all arrested Thursday by state police.

Quatrell Jones, 23, of Johnstown turned himself in to police Friday after an arrest warrant had been issued, according to a news release.

They are accused of breaking into the apartment of Kessel Weber in The Grove apartments off Harmony Road Thursday afternoon, holding him and a friend at gunpoint and stealing cash, a cell phone and other items.

They are charged with burglary, robbery, conspiracy, simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.

Anderson and Durden played for the SRU football team and were arrested following practice Thursday night.

They were immediately dismissed from the team and are banned from campus, pending university discipline, according to a statement from Jon Holtz, SRU director of athletic communication.

The alleged incident happened less than two days before the team’s playoff game against Virginia Union University. That game kicked off Saturday at noon in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

“I am very disappointed in the selfish actions of these two men,” SRU head football coach George Mihalik said in the statement.

“This is certainly not typical behavior among the men in our program and will not be tolerated. Both of these men were immediately and permanently dismissed from our program. Their actions are not representative of the players on our team.”

Durden, a running back, was the team’s second-leading rusher and had 19 rushing touchdowns on the season, according to SRU’s website.

Durden previously played football at Kent State University but was dismissed from the team in 2014 for violating rules. He was suspended the previous year after he was charged with a felony count of receiving stolen property. He later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge as part of a plea agreement.

Anderson played defensive tackle.

“We’re clearly upset these individuals would be involved in this activity,” said Rita Abent, SRU’s executive director for public relations.

Abent added it was fortunate that no one was harmed and said the university appreciated that state police were able to “resolve the incident quickly.”

Mark Evans, a spokesman for The Grove’s parent company Campus Crest, said in an e-mail that the complex has a security service that patrols the property. It is adding to its security team and expanding hours over the next week because of the incident.

The complex’s gates are normally open during the day and closed after 8 p.m. when the office closes, but now they are shut 24 hours a day. Only residents of the complex can get in and out.

“As always, we are constantly taking steps to provide the level of service our residents expect,” Evans said.

It is unclear if there are any additional suspects, or if the four suspects are connected to an attempted homicide shooting case that occurred last Sunday morning outside the Grove.

In that case, three men got out of a vehicle at 12:30 a.m. and allegedly fired shots at a gray Pontiac Grand Prix that was entering the apartment complex, police said.

No arrests have been made in that incident.
