Richard K. “Dick” Sweeney

Richard K. “Dick” Sweeney, 92, of Kittanning passed away peacefully Sunday at his home.

Dick was born on July 15, 1923, in Freeport, a son of the late Margaret (Kennedy) and Andrew Sweeney. He was a member of the Jefferson Center Presbyterian Church in Saxonburg.

Dick served with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal for his service to his country.

He was a truck driver at Freeport Transport for a number of years. He later worked at the Freeport Brick Co. until retirement.

Dick was a life member of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department. He also volunteered his time helping at the Syria Shriners in Cheswick, selling raffle tickets for fundraisers. Dick enjoyed hunting, traveling, camping, playing horseshoes and bike riding.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Louise (Shannon) Sweeney; his four daughters, Diane (John) Shirley of South Buffalo Township, Kathy (Bob) Chambers of Canton, Ga., Sharon (Mike) Carr of Natrona Heights and Margie (John Hoak) Sweeney of Natrona Heights; his son, Mark Richard Sweeney of Carlisle, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Bob Sweeney of Buffalo Township; and his three sisters, Betty Thomas of Greensburg, Jane Redlinger of Washington, Pa., and Frances Hesselgesser of Cabot.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor, Raymond and Mike Sweeney, and one sister, Mary Lou Riddle.

SWEENEY — Family and friends of Richard K. Sweeney, who died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Redmond Funeral Home, 524 High St., Freeport.Visitation will continue at 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jonathan West, pastor, officiating.
