The list of criminal cases continues to grow for a 22-year-old man already jailed on charges he broke into a Butler church and stole a pickup truck to haul away property taken from the house of worship.

State police in three new cases filed Wednesday accused Brandon J. Gurowski of stealing guns from two northern Butler County homes, including one belonging to his parents.

Gurowski, who has no permanent address, has been in the Butler County Prison since Feb. 9 when state police arrested him for another burglary in Franklin Township.

The latest charges follow an investigation of the defendant’s alleged crime spree dating back to December. Investigators suspect the defendant’s heroin addiction was his motivation.

He is charged with the following cases that investigators filed Wednesday at the office of District Judge Tim Shaffer:

Between Jan. 25 and 30, he stole four checks belonging to his elderly grandmother at her home on Sycamore Grove in Worth Township, according to court documents.

Police believe Gurowski forged the victim’s name and cashed the checks for a combined $640. He admitted buying heroin with the money, investigators said.

He is charged with forgery and theft by unlawful taking, both felonies, and misdemeanor theft by deception.

Between Jan. 14 and 30, police said, Gurowski stole three of his father’s firearms from the same house on Sycamore Grove, where the defendant’s parents also live. He traded the guns, valued at a combined $900, for heroin, documents said.

Along with the guns, Gurowski allegedly stole several power tools and a lawn mower belonging to his father.

He is charged with felony and misdemeanor theft.

Dec. 9 or 10, the defendant broke into a mobile home on Primrose Lane in Brady Township, documents said, and stole three long guns — two rifles and a shotgun.

Gurowski allegedly sold the guns and used the money to buy heroin, police said.

He is charged with burglary, trespass and theft, all felonies.

Trooper Joshua Anderson, the investigating officer, said Gurowski is awaiting arraignment on charges in all three cases.

State police arrested Gurowski three weeks earlier stemming from the Feb. 5 break-in of a friend’s home on Unionville Road in Franklin Township.

Troopers said he stole his friend’s Xbox video game console. He was arraigned on a felony charge of burglary a misdemeanor charge of theft and a summary charge of criminal mischief, and he was remanded to the county prison.

During the state police investigation, Anderson got a lead Gurowski and a friend, Lindsay N. Maples, 28, of Mercer Township, may have committed the Jan. 31 burglary of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church on North McKean Street.

A small, flat-screen television and a bucket of canned food was taken from the church.

The information was passed on Feb. 16 to Butler police, who interviewed both suspects. Two days later, city police charged Gurowski and Maples.

Both defendants are charged with burglary, conspiracy, theft and criminal mischief.

But while admitting their roles in the church break-in, the pair of suspects also copped to a related crime, court documents said.

Gurowski and Maples both confessed to stealing a pickup truck on Miller Avenue in Butler soon after the break-in. The theft was easy because the owner left the keys in the truck.

The defendants said they drove the pickup back to the church where they had stashed the TV and canned goods in bushes outside.

The suspects are each charged with felony theft and conspiracy for stealing the pickup. They were arraigned last week for both Butler cases.

Gurowski is in the county prison on $44,500 combined bail. Maples is free on her own recognizance.

Anderson, meanwhile, said Thursday that Gurowski is not suspected in any other crimes.
