Sports filled Best's time at Mars
This is the third part of a five-part series profiling the Mars Athletic Hall of Fame's Class of 2010. The five members will be honored at a dinner Sept. 10 at Mars Middle School.ADAMS TWP — During her high school days, you would have been hard pressed to catch Leda Best simply watching the action.The 1977 Mars High graduate played basketball and ran on the track and field and cross country teams for four years.She also played volleyball her freshman and sophomore years.Best will join four others when she is inducted into the Mars Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 10."Picking my best sport in high school is tough," said Best, who now lives in Jackson, Ga. "I was most successful in track and field, but I really loved playing basketball."She was introduced to sports at an early age."My father, Edward, was big into sports," said Best, who wasn't expecting a call from the Mars Hall of Fame, but deserved one nonetheless. "I was very appreciative and a little shocked when I found out in July that I was being taken into the Hall of Fame."Best was part of two of the most decorated girls squads in Mars history.In her senior year, she helped the Planets win the PIAA girls cross country title — the only state championship in the history of Mars girls sports.Just months before graduating, Best's play at forward aided the girls basketball squad as it captured the WPIAL title."It was always a team effort in high school," she said. "Everybody working together, that was a highlight."In track and field, Best ran the half-mile and competed in the high jump.In 1974 she went to the AAU National Championships in Bakersfield, Calif."I was on a 2-mile relay team and we ended up placing in the top 15 in the country," said Best, who went on to play basketball, softball and run track at Clarion State College.As memorable as the individual and team achievements in high school were, Best often finds herself thinking back to her high school coaches."Both on and off the court, they never gave up on you," she said.
