Both KC teams advance
KARNS CITY — One and done.
That was the story of Karns City's scoring in its District 9 Class A boys soccer semifinal game Tuesday night.
But the Gremlins are far from done in the playoffs.
Senior forward Eric McCue scored his 49th goal of the season less than three minutes into the game and the Gremlins made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Coudersport.
Karns City (17-1-1) returns to the district championship game for the third time in five years, facing the Brockway-Northern Potter winner Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
The Karns City girls (12-7-1) advanced to the Class AA district title game by winning 2-0 at Brookville Tuesday.
"Hey, I like this," Karns City boys coach Roy Parker said of his team's 1-0 win. "This was a great test for us, winning like this just before the district final.
"We've been scoring so many goals. ... It's good getting back to depending on our strong defense to win us a game."
Coudersport (15-5) counted on its goalkeepers to keep it in the game and they delivered.
The Gremlins failed to score in the second half despite peppering goalkeeper Cooper Bonczar with 12 shots, many from point-blank range.
With seconds remaining in the first half, goalkeeper Zac Miller made a diving save on McCue to keep the Falcons only a goal behind.
"That early goal was only the 18th we've given up all year," said Coudersport coach Brian Empson said. "I was disappointed they scored so early, but it didn't affect our game plan any."
McCue tried settling down a lob pass about 20 yards in front of the net early in the game. He noticed goalkeeper Miller coming toward him.
"I just put my foot to the ball and, thankfully, it found the back of the net," McCue said.
McCue's shot rolled past the charging Miller and just inside the left post for the goal.
The Gremlins had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal at halftime. Karns City had seven corner kicks in the game to none for the Falcons.
Coudersport managed only one shot on goal in the second half.
"Most of their offense was going through No. 10 (junior midfielder Alex Renn) in the first half," Parker said. "I told Ethan McGarvey at halftime that I didn't want that kid touching the ball again.
"Ethan did a great job marking him the rest of the way. I think that's what took their offense away"
At the other end, the Gremlins couldn't put a shot behind Bonczar.
"Kudos to that kid," Parker said. "He was stopping everything. This score could have been 5-0."
"It was getting frustrating in there, but my hat's off to their keepers," McCue said. "We couldn't get one by them. The way it turned out, I'm glad we scored early."
Karns City's girls scored late in the game to top Brookville. Emily Olszak scored her fifth of the year and Emily Potchak netted her 11th.
Goalie Brooke Miller earned the shutout.
"This was in no way a one-sided game," KC coach Lisa Castiglione said. "They kept coming back at us the whole game. Territorial play was probably 50-50."
The Gremlins play the winner of the Curwensville-Elk County Catholic game Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
Brookville defeated the Gremlins 1-0 and 5-0 during the regular season. The 5-0 game was only two weeks ago.
"This was a total team win," Castiglione said. "All 11 girls out there played with so much heart."
