Rockets fizzle against 'Hounds

Wilmington runners too much for SR

NEW WILMINGTON — Forget ghosts. Forget goblins. Forget Freddy Krueger and Jigsaw.

For something really scary, look no further than Wilmington's backfield duo of Derrick Burns and Sutton Whiting.

They certainly put a scare into the Slippery Rock High football team Friday night, combining for 206 yards rushing on just 15 carries as the Greyhounds ran away with a 40-0 win.

"They have the total package," said Slippery Rock coach Glenn Hazlet. "Whiting — I believe he is the fastest guy on their team. Once he gets into the secondary, turn the lights out —he's gone. We don't have anyone who can catch him."

Whiting scored three rushing touchdowns, from 3, 8 and 57 yards out, and returned a punt 47 yards for a score. He had 100 yards on eight carries.

Burns, meanwhile, gained 106 yards on seven carries.

"They are both great running backs, there is no question about that," said Wilmington coach Terry Verrelli.

While Wilmington (8-1, 5-1) was churning out yardage at an average of 9 yards per carry, Slippery Rock (2-7, 2-4) struggled just to get positive yards and didn't cross midfield until late in the fourth quarter.

Ayron Gallagher started the game at quarterback and rumbled 22 yards on his first carry. But four first-half sacks gave him minus-6 yards at the break and he gained just 5 yards on 14 carries in the game.

After Whiting's 57-yard score that made it 40-0 29 seconds into the second half, the mercy rule was triggered and the final 23 minutes of the game featured a glorified junior varsity contest.

For Slippery Rock, though, the goal was to evaluate, not only the for the season-finale against Greenville next week, but for next season as well.

Sophomores Sean White and Jim Bury took snaps at quarterback in the second half.

Since losing to Hickory four weeks ago, the Greyhounds have scored 153 unanswered points.

Next week, Wilmington will travel to Karns City to take on the Gremlins — the only team to beat the state champions in 2008.

"We don't start looking at the next opponent until Monday," Verrelli said. "But you know how kids are. I'm sure they remember last season and feel like that have something to prove."
