Students' essays earn scholarships

CRANBERRY TWP - The Cranberry Chamber of Commerce recently honored three area high school seniors at its Scholarship Breakfast at the Venango Tavern.

Presented with $1,000 awards were Scott Golmic of Seneca Valley High School, Amanda Sporrer of North Allegheny High School and Mark Stenner of Mars High School.

Applicants for the Thorn Hill Scholarship were asked to write an essay on "What business they would start and why, if they were given the money to do so?" The top three essays were chosen.

The breakfast also included speaker Carole Demmy of Butler County Community College, who addressed the attendees on what participation and dedication to the Cranberry Chamber has done for her and the college.

Demmy will be retiring and during her 13-year involvement with the chamber, she has served on the education committee, community relations committee, board of directors and as chairman of the board.

Funds for the Thorn Hill Scholarship are raised by the Thorn Hill 5K Run/Walk, scheduled this year for July 24. The race begins at 8 a.m. Race information and registration fees are available by calling the chamber office at 724-776-4949.
