Residents hope to cut long drive to post office

It has been almost two years since the Hilliards Post Office closed, surprising residents of the community.

Dave Rumbaugh, a lifelong resident of Hilliards, said since then he has to drive to Boyers to get mail through a post office box, which is a 10-mile round trip.

According to Rumbaugh, the mail situation in Hilliards has changed a few times over the years.

“They stuck boxes outside; they had 12 to 16 on a post,” Rumbaugh said. “They once talked about bringing a small mail building in.”

Barb Cook owned the building that used to hold the Hilliards Post Office. She said the Postal Service decided to close the location abruptly in 2019, despite her and her husband fixing aspects of the facility.

“We put $800 into it,” she said. “We worked on it for months.”

Cook said she wants a post office back in the community or for the Postal Service to install mailboxes. She said there are 17 residences not getting mail, and most have no choice but to go to the post office in Boyers.

Rumbaugh also said he would like to see a new post office built in Hilliards, or get a communal mailbox installed or even individual mailboxes. Anything that would save him the drive to Boyers and back.

A post office would be ideal for him, however.

“I would like to see a post office so I wouldn't have to change my billing,” Rumbaugh said.

Tad Kelley, U.S. Postal Service spokesperson, said there are no plans to reopen a post office in Hilliards.

The building that once housed the post office has since been torn down by Cook and her family. She said it would not be ideal to rebuild a new building to house the post office, but she and the other residents would like some kind of mailboxes

“We would be happy to just put a mailbox up,” Cook said. “They claim if they put in mailboxes they would have to hire new guy for the load.”
