Losing a piece of the Rock
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Phil Longo has left the program for the same position at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas.
Longo was wide receivers coach for one year at SRU before being named offensive coordinator in 2012.
“Check out the numbers,” SRU head coach George Mihalik said. “Phil did some outstanding work here.”
Longo installed the no-huddle attack that triggered SRU’s run to the PSAC West title and NCAA Division II playoff appearance last fall. The Rock led the PSAC with 43.3 points, 454.3 passing yards and 536.5 total yards per game. SRU ranked fourth nationally in total offense.
Lonfgo’s wife, Tanya, is the women’s basketball coach at SRU and plans to return for the 2014-15 season, athletic director Paul Lueken said.
“Phil brought some new ideas to the program and we’ve incorporated some of those,” Mihalik said. “His up-tempo offense has been good to us the past two years. That’s something we want to continue and we will continue.”
A new offensive coordinator has not been named. Mihalik said planned adjustments of his staff are being formulated.
“When you hire good people, there’s always a chance of them moving on,” Mihalik said. “You can’t blame anybody for advancing his career. I thank Phil for the good work he’s done here.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to surround myself with good assistants ever since I’ve been head coach at The Rock.”
Longo is joining first-year head coach K.C. Keeler at Sam Houston State. He was a running back and was coached by Keeler from 1988-91 at Rowan University.
Sam Houston State is a member of the Southland Conference and the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision. The Bearkats have been to the FCS playoffs each of the past three years and played in the 2011 and 2012 national championship games.
Keeler coached Delaware to the 2003 FCS national championship.
Longo has also served as an assistant coach at Youngstown State, Southern Illinois, Minnesota-Duluth, La Salle and William Paterson University.
