CHICORA — Burglary, theft and receiving stolen property charges against a Butler Township man were held for court after a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Jason T. Ewing, 31, is accused by state police of burglarizing a Cherry Valley home Jan. 19, taking eight guns and a blanket.

Trooper Matthew Stivac testified Tuesday that the tread on a boot recovered from Ewing's father's house matched footprints in the snow photographed by police.

Employees of Yaracs Family Auction told police that Ewing gave his driver's license when he sold four of the guns on Jan. 19 and 21, Stivac said.

The other four stolen guns have not been recovered, he said. Two people were observed walking on Oneida Valley Road within 1 mile of the house on the day of the burglary, but police have been unable to identify them, he said.

Ryan Helsel of the public defender's office argued that there was not enough evidence to sustain the burglary and criminal mischief charges. District Judge Lewis Stoughton said that the recovered boots matching the bootprints at the house were enough for the case to move to Butler County Court.

Stoughton held the charges for court and denied Helsel's request for his $50,000 bond to be reduced.

Ewing also faces felony drug possession charges after police arrested him at a Butler Township apartment where they allegedly found an assortment of drugs.
