Charges changed in alleged spree
CRANBERRY TWP — Some charges were dropped for a trio accused of leading an eight-day retail theft spree at Walmart and Home Depot in Cranberry Township, but they still face 138 counts among them.
Before district Judge David Kovach on Friday, the state dropped one count of felony organized retail theft against Joshua M. Devlin, 31, of Pittsburgh: his girlfriend Janina L. Carrigan, 26, of Pittsburgh; and Carrigan's mother, Danielle McWilliams, 47, of Saxonburg. The charge of felony identity theft, levied only against Devlin, was also dropped.
Kovach, at the request of prosecutors, also decreased the bail for Carrigan and McWilliams, from $25,000 to $10,000. Devlin's bail remained at $6,000.
All three defendants waived their rights to a preliminary hearing.
Despite the four charges dropped against the trio, each still faces 18 felony counts, ranging from retail theft and receiving stolen property to child endangerment, the latter of which stems from the presence of a 7-year-old who was present during several of the alleged thefts.
Combined, the three defendants also face 84 misdemeanor counts.
Cranberry police originally sought charges against Devlin, Carrigan and McWilliams after they visited Walmart or Home Depot each day from Nov. 14 to 20, as well as on Nov. 12, to shoplift items from the stores, the charging officer wrote in an affidavit. On several days, either McWilliams or Devlin drove to the Walmart, while the other went to the Home Depot, the affidavit states.
Over the course of the eight-day spree, police allege, the three stole goods worth $8,101 from Home Depot and $1,009 from Walmart for a total of $9,110 in stolen property during 12 retail thefts.
As of Friday afternoon, Carrigan, Devlin and McWilliams remain in Butler County Prison in lieu of bond.
