New traffic light coming to Rte. 228
SEVEN FIELDS — A new left-turn light and a three-way stop sign are likely coming to the borough as a result of a new mixed-use development off Route 228.
A PennDOT traffic impact study done for the Enclave at High Pointe development recommended a left-only turn light be installed on Route 228 east, said John Balewski, borough engineer.
There is a left turn lane there already, but no dedicated light. The Enclave is a mixed-used development at the undeveloped corner of Route 228 and High Pointe Drive. It is slated to bring more than 50 townhouses, restaurants, retail space and a four-story medical office to the 16-acre lot.
The new, dedicated left-turn signal will make it easier for eastbound drivers on Route 228 to get onto High Pointe Drive, but will reduce the level of service at that intersection for drivers heading west on Route 228, Balewski said.
“Now you have to fight to make the left. This will give you a light,” Balewski said. But it will slightly delay westbound traffic while they wait for the left-only turn light.
Balewski said before the light can be put in, PennDOT wanted word from the borough council saying they were OK with the reduction in service due to the light. Council unanimously gave its approval for the new light.
Councilman Brian Trimble said he expects the left-turn light to inconvenience drivers coming from the Mars area heading to Interstate 79 in the morning, but it will be better for Seven Fields residents overall.
The traffic study also recommended a three-way stop sign be put in at the intersection of High Pointe Drive and Sycamore Drive. There is a stop sign at Sycamore Drive to turn onto High Pointe, but none on High Pointe Drive.
Council approved a legal ad for the amendment that would allow the new stop signs and will vote on the change at its August meeting, said borough manager Tom Smith.
