Move favors firm
CRANBERRY TWP — In a victory for Cranberry-based Westinghouse, Georgia Power has recommended that the Georgia Public Service Commission support completion of the two Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant units currently under construction at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Ga.
“We are very pleased with Georgia Power’s decision to recommend the continued construction of Vogtle 3 and 4, and are honored to have the opportunity to move forward with our Vogtle customers,” said Jose Gutiérrez, president and chief executive officer of Westinghouse in a news release.
“These units will continue to provide employment for thousands of workers as we help to bring safe, clean, affordable nuclear energy to the citizens of Georgia,” he added.
“Georgia Power’s continued confidence in the AP1000 plant technology strengthens their energy offerings and nuclear energy’s role in America’s infrastructure,” Gutierrez said.
The AP1000 plant design has met with approval by nuclear regulatory authorities in the United States, the United Kingdom and China.
Work is nearing completion on the world’s first four AP1000 units at the Sanmen and Haiyang sites in China, according to the company.
