Man faces charges for crashing Jeep into store

PARKER — A local man faces a half-dozen traffic charges after state police say he crashed his Jeep into the side of a grocery store early Monday in this Armstrong County city.

On Tuesday, police identified Frederick J. Dunlap, 55, as the driver who slammed into the building that houses Welter's Country Market on North River Avenue about 2 a.m.

Dunlap was flown by STAT MedEvac to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh with unknown injuries. His condition was not available Tuesday.

Police said Dunlap was speeding in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee while traveling west on Route 368. He failed to stop at a stop sign and lost control of the vehicle, apparemtly while turning onto North River Avenue, also known as Route 268.

The Jeep struck the store, causing “significant damage” to the building, according to a police report.

“The vehicle landed on the passenger side,” said Rick Amsler, assistant chief of the Parker Volunteer Fire Department, “with the bottom of the vehicle up against the side of the building.”

The crash damaged the exterior wall and caused interior damage to merchandise and property inside, said store owner Tim Welter Jr.

Dunlap, who did not have his seat belt on, was trapped in the Jeep when emergency crews arrived. He was injured but conscious and talking.

He was cited for driving too fast for conditions, careless driving, disregarding traffic lanes, driving with a suspended license, a stop sign violation and failing to wear a seat belt.
