In Brief

The Butler-Freeport Community Trail Association will hold its annual Last Day Hike at 2 p.m. Monday.

All are welcome to participate in the three- to five-mile hike, including pets on leashes.

Walkers will meet at the parking lot at Center and Hembold avenues near the caboose.

Hot chocolate and s'mores will be served following the leisurely walk, which will follow pandemic guidelines of 50 people or fewer. Should a large turnout occur, walkers will head both north and south on the trail.

The association also reminds trail users that their fundraising campaign is still active. Donations can be made through PayPal or at butlerfreeporttrail.org, or by sending a check to BFCTC, P.O. Box 533, Saxonburg, PA 16056.

Amazon.com shoppers can also designate the Butler-Freeport Trail as their donation recipient on AmazonSmile.

The association is in need of donations because the Buffalo Creek Half Marathon, the group's largest annual fundraiser, was canceled in October due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Almost all donations are used for regular maintenance and upgrades on the 20-mile rail trail.

A First Walk will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 1 on the Armstrong Trail in the Rimersburg/East Brady area.Armstrong Trails officials announced that the three-mile walk will begin at the trail's Phillipston parking lot, 94 Apple St., Rimersburg.A bonfire at the newly renovated train turntable, just a few steps from the parking lot, will welcome walkers with refreshments and a view of the turntable. An update will be presented on the Brady Tunnel rehabilitation project, the trail's 2021 goals and how residents can support Armstrong Trails.Leashed pets are welcome, and all state coronavirus pandemic protocols will be observed. The event is free and no registration is necessary.More information is available at armstrongtrails.org.
