State police are investigating a one-vehicle crash early this morning that killed a 20-year-old man in Slippery Rock Township.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man, who lived in Slippery Rock. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck about 12:25 a.m. in the area of Harmony Road and East Campus Drive at the entrance to Slippery Rock University.

It was not clear if the man was an SRU student. He had a Texas driver's license, investigators said.

The man was driving a Nissan Rogue that struck a tree, authorities said. He was alone in the vehicle. A passerby apparently came upon the crash and called 911.

The Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team responded and found the driver still in the severely damaged vehicle.

“There was heavy entrapment,” said Slippery Rock Fire Chief Ryan Hanchosky.

By the time fire crews reached him, the man was found deceased, authorities said. He was not wearing a seat belt. Butler County Coroner William Young III pronounced him dead. An autopsy was not planned.

Police said speed may have been a factor. Emergency crews described the road as “clear.”
