Officers subdue impaired suspect

A man suspected of being impaired on drugs was arrested Monday, but not before Butler police said they had to use force to place him in handcuffs.

The defendant, Randall W. Watterson, 32, of Butler Township, was eventually searched and allegedly found with suspected heroin.

Watterson was arraigned on charges of resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and public drunkenness. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $3,000 bond.

Police said they came upon Watterson after they got a welfare check call shortly before 4 p.m. for a man on the 100 block of South Main Street. Officers found the suspect “slumped over a bench,” according to charging documents.

He was unable to stand and appeared to be under the influence of opiates, police said. An emergency medical crew assisted police, and Watterson was given two doses of Narcan. But when advised he was being arrested for public intoxication, police said, the defendant refused to place his hands behind his back and tried to pull away. Watterson was taken to the ground, police said, and “drive-stunned” with a Taser. Police said he was searched and found with six stamp bags of suspected heroin.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22.
