New chief public defender named for Butler County
Charles Nedz, an attorney and current assistant public defender for Butler County, has accepted the position of chief public defender.
The county commissioners announced on Tuesday that Nedz will commence his duties as interim public defender next week.
Nedz replaces Kevin Flaherty, the current chief public defender, who will officially leave office on Jan. 4, when he will be sworn in as district judge in Cranberry Township.
Nedz graduated from Dayton School of Law in 1992 and operated a private law practice until he came to the county in 2000 and accepted the position of public defender.
Nedz is certified by the state Supreme Court to try cases involving the death penalty, according to a county news release.
He also served as a Butler Township commissioner from 2014 to 2018.
Nedz is a member of the state Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the Slippery Rock University Justice Advisory Board.
