SRU women win tournament title

Slippery Rock University's women's basketball team improved to 2-1 Saturday with a 72-60 win over West Virginia State in the Kanwha City Red Roof Classic championship game.

No further details were available on the game.

SRU got to the title contest by defeating West Virginia Tech, 55-42, Friday night. Freshman guard Jessica Schake scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in her first varsity start.

Sophomore post player Amanda Chojnacki added eight points and five rebounds while senior point guard and Grove City High graduate Amber McFeely contributed seven points and eight assists.

SRU travels to Fairmont State Tuesday night.

SRU junior setter Sara Kirsch has been named to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional all-tournament team.Kirsch had 33 assists, 12 digs and a .500 hitting percentage in The Rock's first-round regional tourney loss to Indiana (Pa.).

Matt Lobaugh scored 24 points and Jeremy Peterson added 15 on five 3-pointers as Butler County Community College (3-2) defeated Kent State-Tuscarawas 96-67 Saturday.Keith Wynne added 12 points while Butler graduate Bob Freshwater had 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Chris Harmon had eight assists and four steals.The Pioneers play at Grove City College (junior varsity) at 7 p.m. today.
