Runaway truck crashes into auto dealership
PENN TWP — A runaway pickup truck that crashed into a Penn Township auto dealership Monday morning, damaging two new pickups, may have been caused by a brake malfunction, authorities said.
The driver, Lee Ketchem, 34, of Penn Township, was not injured but his pickup, a 2004 Ford F-150, was totaled.
“He said his brakes failed,” Middlesex Township Patrolman Randy Davison said.
Ketchem was southbound on Route 8 on his way home about 10:50 a.m., when he tried to stop for the red light at McCalmont Road.
“He hit his brakes and started sliding and couldn’t stop,” Davison said.
Ketchem swerved to avoid hitting a northbound vehicle about to turn left onto McCalmont Road. The unstoppable truck traveled through the intersection and kept going.
It left about 50 feet of skid marks, police said, before careening into the parking lot of Mike Kelly Chevrolet Cadillac.
It narrowly missed hitting a new sport utility vehicle, but then the Ford smashed into a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.
The impact pushed the parked truck into a second 2014 Chevy Silverado that was parked next to the first one.
The two Chevy trucks, which have never been sold and are considered new, have minor to moderate damage, police said. Both could still be driven after the accident.
But Ketchem’s Ford could not. A tow truck had to haul it away.
Davison said he did not believe speed was a factor in the accident. He believed faulty brakes was a possible cause.
“I can’t disprove it,” the officer said.
Davison admitted the tow truck driver told police when he checked the Ford’s brakes after the accident, they worked.
However, that finding did not discount Ketchem’s story, investigators said.
“The brake valve could have gotten stuck before the accident, which caused the failure,” Davison said, “and then the impact jarred the valve (loose).”
Police did not expect any charges or citations to be filed.
Afterward, Davison gave the unlucky driver a ride home.
“He was upset,” the officer said of Ketchem, “especially hitting two brand new vehicles. Not to mention totaling his own.”
Telephone calls Monday to Mike Kelly Chevrolet Cadillac were not returned.
