Butler school district plans for construction

10 classrooms, new tech in works

Butler Area School District has a few more boxes to check before getting full approval on an addition project at Butler Senior High School.

The Butler Township Planning Commission members agreed to recommend a land development request from the school district Tuesday to the Butler Township commissioners, pending several contingencies.

In order to receive full approval from the commission, the developers must comply with a June letter from Gateway Engineers Inc. regarding stormwater management plans in the addition.

The developers must also get a developer's agreement approved with the township solicitor, post a financial security payment in an amount agreed upon by the solicitor, get approval of a stormwater operation and maintenance agreement and receive approvals from the Butler Area Sewer Authority and from the Department of Environmental Protection for the project.

The school district is working with a project manager from IKM and an engineer from Sheffler and Co. for the 19,000-square-foot addition, which will add 10 new classrooms to the high school, as well as a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) space, with wood shops, 3D printers and additional technology.

According to the project manager, the addition will physically connect three individual wings of the high school that are currently connected by a covered walkway.

Brian Slamecka, assistant superintendent of Butler Area School District, said the goal of this project is to move sixth-grade students to Butler Intermediate High School, and the ninth grade to the high school.

“Really, the impetus of it is having the ninth grade move to the senior high school for that true high school setup,” Slamecka told the commission.
