Driver dies in single car crash on I-79
CRANBERRY TWP — A fatal single-car accident shut down part of Interstate 79 in both directions for nearly three hours Friday.
According to state police, the driver involved in the accident died. First responders said the red sedan rolled over several times while traveling north on I-79 at Mile Marker 79 just before 3:30 p.m. The sedan came to a final stop in the median facing north, but closer to the southbound lanes.
The median in that area of the highway is heavily sloped, with a significant drop from the northbound to the southbound lanes. The sedan had extensive damage to all sides and debris was scattered on both sides of the interstate.
First responders originally shut down the left lanes on both sides of the highway. The southbound end was closed beginning at Exit 85 — Evans City in Jackson Township at around 4:30 p.m. Northbound traffic was halted at the on-ramp from Route 228 shortly after.
Traffic heading north on the interstate continued at around 6 p.m. Friday. Responders cleared the scene just before 6:15 p.m., at which point traffic resumed in the southbound lanes as well.
