Experts confirmed a weak tornado touched down Monday in Lawrence County.

“It was a fairly brief touchdown, and then it came back up,” said meteorologist Alicia Miller.

According to Miller, the report listed the location being 5 miles northwest of Portersville, which was the closest community to the site.

More specifically, the site was on the north side of Route 422 across from Living Treasures Animal Park, 268 Fox Road, New Castle.

An administrator from the park said the park did not sustain any damages, and the animals were all safe.

Miller said the tornado touched down around 9:37 p.m. and was rated EF-0, which would put its wind speeds between 60 and 65 mph.

She said a tornado was generated from a storm in Ohio that reached Pennsylvania, which had prompted the service to issue a tornado warning for Butler County on Monday night.

“It was storm that was riding along the warm front,” Miller said. “The warm front provided a little bit of shear or spin to this storm.”

Though no tornado touched down in Butler County this time, Miller said it's always a good idea to plan for the worst-case scenario.

“Go into an interior room or to a basement to take shelter,” she said. “When we issue a tornado warning, we want people to take the appropriate action.”
