Conno park to be renamed Hamilton
Connoquenessing Creek Park in Zelienople on Thursday will officially become Hamilton Park.
Wild Waterways Conservancy, an all-volunteer charitable land conservancy that owns more than 500 acres in the Connoquenessing Creek watershed, will host a “simple dedication ceremony” at 6 p.m. Thursday to honor the legacy of Wesley Hamilton, a conservancy founder and noted environmental activist.
At the beginning of the ceremony, a memorial stone and plaque will be unveiled to honor Hamilton’s contributions to the conservancy and environment.
The conservancy said in a news release that Hamilton partnered with Zelienople Borough to acquire the two-acre park on Halstead Boulevard. Wild Waterways said the renaming of the former Connoquenessing Creek Park is most appropriate as it is believed to be Hamilton’s first public land acquisition.
Prior to his 2019 death, Hamilton had a significant impact on improving and preserving Butler County’s natural resources, according to the conservancy. He founded and guided a number of nonprofits and recruited “countless” volunteers, ultimately preserving more than 1,000 acres of public lands, reintroducing ospreys to Moraine State Park and completing “numerous” habitat improvement projects.
Hamilton’s widow, Sue, and his children’s families are expected to attend Thursday evening’s ceremony, along with a number of individuals who worked with Hamilton on his many projects.
