The race for the new 17th Congressional District, which includes some of Cranberry Township, will come down to Rep. Conor Lamb, D-18th, and Rep. Keith Rothfus, R-12th.

Democratic candidate Ray Linsenmayer became the latest person to back out of the race Sunday, when he suspended his campaign and gave his support to Lamb.

In a statement posted to his campaign’s Facebook page, Linsenmayer wrote that Democrats should stand united in their effort to take back the district.

“This congressional race has become a national flashpoint. The GOP is taking our country in the wrong direction, and voters are alarmed that Republicans in Congress have failed to restrain a president who is spinning out of control,” he wrote.

Lamb, 33, is a former federal prosecutor and earlier this year won a special election for the 18th Congressional District, defeating Republican candidate Rick Saccone, a state representative for the 39th Legislative District. Lamb’s term continues until the end of the year.

Lamb, a resident of Mount Lebanon, lives in the 17th District under the revised map put in place by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which earlier this year ruled the current map unconstitutional.

Rothfus, who has served in Congress since 2011, is seeking re-election in a substantially different district that now includes more of Allegheny County, part of Butler County and no longer includes any of Westmoreland, Cambria and Somerset counties.
