Burn pile spread to shed

CONCORD TWP — Learn before you burn.

That’s the public warning local firefighters issued after a wind-swept burn pile Wednesday spread to a shed and woods at a mobile home court on Route 38 in Concord Township.

Quick action by three fire departments limited the damage and no one was hurt.

“The best advice is that if it’s windy out and dry, put off burning that day,” said Chief Nick Grove of the North Washington Volunteer Fire Company.

Grove’s department as well as firefighters from West Sunbury and Oneida Valley were called about 4:45 p.m. for a fire at Campbell’s Trailer Park, north of Hooker.

Authorities believe a woman burning papers at a burn pile accidentally started the fire that ignited a nearby 10-foot-by-12-foot wooden shed.

“The outside and bottom of the shed was burning slightly when we got there,” Grove said.

Brush and woods in back of the trailer park had also caught fire.

Crews hit the fire spots with water and the trouble was over in about 20 minutes.

Grove estimated damaged to the shed at “a few thousand (dollars).” He said it likely could be restored.

Trailer park owner Ray Campbell owns the shed, which primarily contained tools and vehicle parts. Some of the contents were destroyed.

About an acre at the park also was burned.
